Oh, how I love thee... let me count the ways... As a new member of motorcycles, a mixed bike community, I've noticed the two camps of sport bike vs. cruiser. At the moment I ride a sport bike (Buell -a H-D division). But, my heart pounds at the sight of a beautiful Harley-Davidson bike, particularly the Nightster. But, let me tell you why I am so devoted to Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
H-D has been around for 105 years and their distinctive motor and styling has left an indelible mark on this world. They worked tirelessly through various presidents and economies, improving their motorcycles. Unfortunately, at some point AMF bought them during what many refer to as the "dark ages." During this period, due to mismanagement, HD bikes were shoddily produced resulting in inferior bikes. Ten (or 11) managers each chipped in $1,000,000 each to put up the money for a bank loan to buy HD back from AMF. This worked and light shone down on the world once again (although they almost folded). I have great respect for that act. BUT that is NOT the only reason why I love HD.
I love the factory workers at HD. All dedicated folk, many are hardcore bikers. They are all highly skilled workers. During a recent factory tour of Powertrain Operations in Wisconsin, I met an older HD metal worker who had been working for HD for over 40 years (40 freaking years). She was the woman. She described having to work on a certain line for 10 years before being able to work on certain parts of the engine. Skilled workers you bet. Dedicated workers you bet. WORTH EVERY FREAKING PENNY THEY ASK FOR FOR THEIR AWESOME BIKES. If you want a beautiful bike built by American workers and you want to pay them their due, then you are going to pay for that labor.
I LOVE YOU ALL HARLEY-DAVIDSON WORKERS!!!! THANK YOU!!!!
